MOMM President's Report - January, 2012

Hi MOMMS.  Well, it’s baaack!  Winter, that is, although fortunately for most of us in southern Michigan, it took an unusually long time getting here.  In my particular neighborhood (Grand Rapids), we hardly had any measurable snow before January 1, and even then it only amounted to about 2 inches or so.  I know most club members have their Miatas in winter storage right now, but I still see a few on the road occasionally.  Some messages posted on “Miata.net” claim that Miatas can be lots of fun when driven in winter conditions, however I remain to be convinced.  I keep remembering that photo posted several years ago in the Grand Rapids Press (see below) in conjunction with a story about winter potholes.  Does this look like a happy Miata driver to you?  Nope, didn’t think so!

Greetings MOMMs.  We are now officially in the Miata doldrums time of year, at least for those of us who remain in Michigan during the winter months.  Miata sightings on local roadways are getting pretty rare these days, although a few hardy folks do drive their Miatas all year round, snow and ice not withstanding.  Our club has quite a large contingent of members who head south for the winter, including several who take their Miatas along.  You’ll easily recognize these folks when they return home next spring… they will be the ones with the healthy, glowing tans, as opposed to the rest of us whose appearances will be more akin to that of pale, bloodless zombies!  Frown

Hi MOMMs.  2011 will go down in history as the year of MOMM’s “colorless color tour”.  Eighteen Miatas participated in this year’s October 22 event.  Unlike the rain-soaked 2010 tour, we had beautiful sunny skies this year, although cold air temperatures kept all but the hardiest drivers from touring “topless”.  Unfortunately though,  the tree colors were pretty dismal, and did little to promote expressions of “shock and awe” from folks in our entourage.  Even so, the roads on our 65-mile drive were curving and entertaining, and everyone seemed to be having fun.

Hi MOMMs.  Ah yes, those sunny, warm days are growing steadily shorter, gray clouds are looming on the horizon, and the 2011 Miata driving season will soon be coming to an end.   Better get out soon to enjoy what’s left of the few nice fall days we have remaining.  A good opportunity will be MOMM’s upcoming color tour “Colors, Curves, & Cuisine” scheduled for October 22.  At the moment we have seven Miatas signed up for the tour, but there’s plenty of room available for a few more cars.  So take a break from that end-of-season yard work, and join us for some driving fun!

Greetings MOMMs.  To begin, please welcome our newest MOMM members Dorothy (Dot) & Steve Scherbinski of Byron Center.  The Scherbinski’s drive a 2001 blue Miata., and we look forward to meeting both of them soon at a future MOMM event!

Hi MOMMS.  Sun, blue skies, cool breezes, and a beautiful rural park setting – these were the superb conditions enjoyed by 30 MOMMs and assorted guests at the second annual MOMM Summer Picnic on July 16.  A total of 14 Miatas made it to this year’s picnic, along with one Mazda 6 “mother ship” (mine) needed to bring the complimentary dessert cake and several boxes of nifty door prizes.  There were quite a few veteran members in attendance and also some newer MOMMs including Jerry and Joyce Hough, Mike and Barb Lucas, Ron and Nancy Masselink, and Jim (“Dutch”) Van Singel.  Sadly we did not have any visitors from other area clubs joining us on this occasion, but as a consolation we had ample door prizes available so that no MOMMs left the picnic empty-handed!  This was a great opportunity for MOMM members to meet with one another and share co
