Looking for an entertaining but less-traveled alternative to the storied “Tail of the Dragon” (US-129) in Tennessee?  Try US-421 in extreme eastern Tennessee, just west of the famous Blue Ridge Parkway.  Exit the Parkway on US-321 and drive a few miles north to Boone, North Carolina, where you will pick up US-421.  Then follow US-412 north into Tennessee toward the communities of Mountain City and Shady Valley.  Just inside Tennessee, the road quickly becomes a twisty, undulating series of curves and switchbacks through the Cherokee National Forest.  This continues for nearly 40 miles until you approach Bristol where the curves subside, and your gear-shift-hand can enjoy some well-deserved relief!

You will find this section of highway to be every bit as challenging to drive as the more well-known “Dragon”, while being not nearly so crowded with  cars or crazed motorcyclists.  Pavement conditions are good for the most part, and scenery through the national forest is very enjoyable – for passengers, that is, since drivers will be devoting their full attention to road conditions!  Unlike the “Dragon”, US-421 does have many intersecting local roads and driveways which requires that drivers use extra caution when rounding blind curves or topping hills.

If your motoring travels take you near this part of eastern Tennessee, give US-421 at try.  I think you will find it well worth your time.
